Dialog Validation

This post will explain how one can add and implement custom AuthorUI/TouchUI Dialog Form Field validation.

Setup

AEM Dialog Validation works by registering to foundation.validation.validator and implementing a set of fields. This should be done it its own ClientLibrary, the following snippet shows the ClientLibraryFolder .content.xml node.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<jcr:root xmlns:cq="http://www.day.com/jcr/cq/1.0" xmlns:jcr="http://www.jcp.org/jcr/1.0"
jcr:primaryType="cq:ClientLibraryFolder"
allowProxy="{Boolean}true"
categories="[cq.authoring.dialog]"
dependencies="[cq.authoring.dialog.all,granite.jquery]"/>

The categories and dependencies are important. This will ensure, that your javascript code will only be loaded while editing AEM Dialogs.

My ClientLib directory looks like this:

- /clientlib-dialogvalidation
-- /js
--- extensionSvgValidation.js
--- multifieldValidation.js
--- urlValidation.js
-- .content.xml
-- js.txt

Let's take a look at the basic validation fields which need to be implemented and registered.

(function ($) {
"use strict";
$(window)
.adaptTo("foundation-registry")
.register(
"foundation.validation.validator", {
selector: "[data-foundation-validation=<your-custom-attribute>]",
validate: function (el) {
// validates the field. return false for invalid content
},
show: function (el, message) {
// triggers a notification popup when validation fails
}
});
})(Granite.$);

An important part is the selector matching. This attributes 'maps' your validation logic to a data-attribute set to a dialog field. The latter can be done either via a granite:data node, or by adding validation=<your-custom-attribute> directly to any dialog field. Take a look at the following examples to see it in action.

The following subchapter demonstrate some examples on how the above can be used in various validation scenarios.

Generic Regex Validation

A common use case is the need to match an input field value against a given regex pattern. This examples matches the given pathfield value (should be a url) against a pattern that matches a valid external url. We set our validation attribute to url, which we then use in our validation selector selector: "[data-foundation-validation=url]".

<endpointUrl
jcr:primaryType="nt:unstructured"
sling:resourceType="granite/ui/components/coral/foundation/form/textfield"
fieldDescription="Please provide a valid URL"
fieldLabel="External Endpoint (URL)"
name="./endpointUrl"
validation="url"
required="{Boolean}true"/>

We define a pattern in our validation javascript code and use it to match against the given elements value. On error, a notification badge informs the author of the failed validation - including a custom error message.

(function ($) {
"use strict";

//https://stackoverflow.com/questions/3809401/what-is-a-good-regular-expression-to-match-a-url
const PATTERN_URL = "https?:\\/\\/(www\\.)?[-a-zA-Z0-9@:%._\\+~#=]{1,256}\\.[a-zA-Z0-9()]{1,6}\\b([-a-zA-Z0-9()@:%_\\+.~#?&//=]*)"

$(window)
.adaptTo("foundation-registry")
.register(
"foundation.validation.validator", {
selector: "[data-validation=url]",
validate: function (el) {
var element = $(el);
var value = element.val().toString();
if (value.length > 0) {
if (value.match(PATTERN_URL)) {
// valid input
} else {
return "Please enter valid url.";
}
}

},
show: function (el, message) {
var $el = $(el);

var fieldAPI = $el.adaptTo("foundation-field");
if (fieldAPI && fieldAPI.setInvalid) {
fieldAPI.setInvalid(true);
}

var error = $el.data("foundation-validation.internal.error");

if (error) {
error.content.innerHTML = message;

if (!error.parentNode) {
$el.after(error);
error.show();
}
} else {
error = new Coral.Tooltip();
error.variant = "error";
error.interaction = "off";
error.placement = "bottom";
error.target = el;
error.content.innerHTML = message;
error.open = true;
error.id = Coral.commons.getUID();

$el.data("foundation-validation.internal.error", error);
$el.after(error);
}
}
});
})(Granite.$);

File Extension Validation

A very similar approach can be used to check for a file validation. With this, it is possible to, for example, restrict an image upload field to a predefined set of file extensions. For readability’s sake, the snippet only includes the relevant parts - the overall structure does not change and can be copied from the regex example.

<iconPath
jcr:primaryType="nt:unstructured"
sling:resourceType="granite/ui/components/coral/foundation/form/pathfield"
fieldLabel="Icon Path"
emptyText="e.g. /content/dam/icons/home.svg"
filter="hierarchyNotFile"
name="./iconPath"
validation="extension-svg"
rootPath="/content/dam/icons"/>
const PATTERN_URL = "^.*\\.(svg)$"
// [...]

"[data-foundation-validation=extension-svg]",
validate: function (el) {
var element = $(el);
var value = element.val().toString();
if (value.length > 0) {
if (value.match(PATTERN_URL)) {
// valid input
} else {
return "Only .svg files are allowed.";
}
}

},
// [...]

Multifield Min / Max Item Amount

We want to restrict an author to a specific amount of Multifield items that can be created. To achieve this, we need to write two attributes to the dom. We are doing this via a granite:data node:

<icons jcr:primaryType="nt:unstructured"
sling:resourceType="granite/ui/components/coral/foundation/form/multifield"
composite="{Boolean}true">
<granite:data
jcr:primaryType="nt:unstructured"
max-items="5"
min-items="1"/>
<field jcr:primaryType="nt:unstructured"
sling:resourceType="granite/ui/components/coral/foundation/container"
name="./icons">
<items jcr:primaryType="nt:unstructured">
</items>
</field>
</icons>

Our selector will match all coral-multifields, however, our custom logic then only runs, if the specified attributes are present.

// [...]
"coral-multifield",
validate: function (el) {
// coral-multifield -> MultifieldCollection -> getAll -> List of coral-multifield-items
var totalPanels = el.items.getAll().length;
var min = el.getAttribute("data-min-items");
var max = el.getAttribute("data-max-items");

if (min) {
min = parseInt(min);
if (min > 0 && totalPanels < min) {
return "Minimum amount of items required are: " + min;
}
}
if (max) {
max = parseInt(max);
if (max > 0 && totalPanels > max) {
return "Maximum amount of items allowed are: " + max;
}
}
},
// [...]
